St. Joseph’s Elects Senior
Prefects
St. Joseph’s High School has elected twenty two Senior Prefects from Years 12-14. They are led by the Head Boy Seamus Kelly, Head Girl Rosemary Loye, Deputy Head Boy Miceal Murphy and Deputy Head Girl Shannon Booth . Throughout the coming school year Senior Prefects will be given real opportunities to contribute fully in a very visible and positive way to the enhancement of their school community. Their main responsibility is to lead by example, to be good role models for younger students; they will also take on a supervision role at break and lunchtimes, speak at school events and assist at school functions. The Year 12 Senior Prefects are in charge of organising the annual school formal. The school wishes them success in this responsible role.

PLACE IN NORTHERN IRELAND BOOK
AWARD COMPETITION
St. Joseph’s High School, Crossmaglen students were delighted to achieve third place among tough competition in the Northern Ireland Book Award Photo Competition.
Leanne Mc Carthy, Denise Buckley and Katie Mc Bride participated in the competition under the guidance of the school Librarian Mrs. Margaret Mc Namee.
Students were asked to take a photo which reflected the book they were reading.St. Joseph's Students were reading Neil Gaiman's ‘The Graveyard Book’ and took their photo in Creggan Parish Church, Graveyard and Poets' Glen, Crossmaglen, Co. Armagh.

Outstanding GCSE results
reflected in Sixth Form
Intake in St Joseph’s
With GCSE results the highest ever in St Joseph’s, it is no surprise that the Sixth Form has increased in size. Almost 60 students join Sixth Form this year as compared to the first intake of just 18 in 2003. Parents of these students have been addressed by Mr. Scally where the commitment and dedication required to study at ‘A’ Level was discussed. St. Joseph’s success can in part be contributed to the ongoing partnership that has been established between home and school.
Mr Doherty (Head of Careers) also spoke about university and other post A Level options which provided food for thought about the future. Students have already attended a team building day in ‘The Share Centre’ in Lisnaskea whereby they were given the opportunity to spend time with the peers that they would now be working. Students thoroughly enjoyed this day and have already gained valuable skills in team work. At St. Joseph’s we recognise that academic achievement is not enough for our students.
Universities are requesting more than academic success, they require the students to have the ability to work with others, present information, carry out planning and research – universities want independent learners. In answer to this we provide the COPE (Certificate of Personal Effectiveness course – level 3). Not only is this recognised by many universities as 70 additional UCAS points, it adds a vital other dimension to applications.
Students take part in the Young Enterprise Scheme whereby they are given the opportunity to operate within real business conditions, attend trade fairs and experience the running of a business first hand. They are given the support and advice from local business people. New for 2010 we are offering 8 students the chance to complete silver level Presidents Award. This is an exciting and challenging venture that will greatly supplement and indeed enhance a student’s repertoire of achievements.
Students will be given the opportunity to work as form class buddies to year 8 students and assist in a programme of paired reading for junior classes. Students will complete a PIPS suicide awareness programme and take part in varied courses to enhance their pastoral needs. Sixth Form at St Joseph’s ensures that students grow holistically both academically and pastorally, the students become ambassadors for the school.
